England vs South Africa 1st T20 Preview & Tips
England have not been at their best in the One Day International series with South Africa, but they will arrive for their Twenty20 series against the same opponent with renewed hope of a series win after their crushing 342 run win in the final ODI.

- England Form
- South Africa Form
South Africa have been strong across their ODI series against England, with a chance to beat England across both shorter formats on the cards.
- England have won their last three T20 games
- South Africa have lost four of their last five T20 outings
- Jos Buttler has two fifties and an average of 38.88 in T20’s in 2025 for England
Head To Head
In their last 10 T20 meetings, England have secured six wins, with South Africa triumphing in the other four.
England Form
England struggled in the 50 over game against South Africa, with an inability to chase a score or set one ultimately costing them. While they did romp to a massive 342 run win over their opponents in the final ODI, this came with the series over as a contest.
Fortunately for England, they have been far better in the T20 game than they have been in the ODI format. Currently sitting at third in the world in the men’s T20 rankings, England arrive with three wins in their last three, and they will be confident with a very strong lineup.
Jos Buttler looked good in the ODI series, and he will likely be given the job of opening the batting in the T20 game. Currently averaging 38.88 in the shortest format, Buttler will fancy his chances of making a quick start for England, and I back him to hit the ground running with the top score for the home side.
South Africa Form
Fresh from securing a 2-1 ODI series win over England, South Africa will aim for a double success over an opponent that has been searching for their best across formats.
The worry for South Africa is that their form in the T20 format is not great. They were beaten twice by New Zealand and once by Australia before then beating the Aussies. They then slipped to another defeat at the hands of Australia as they lost the series 2-1.
While South Africa were strong in the ODI series, I predict that they will struggle against the power that England will bring with the bat as they slip to defeat in the first T20.
Verdict
I am backing Jos Buttler to top score for England as he drags his side to a 1-0 series lead over South Africa.
