- South Africa Form
South Africa were superb in the first ODI as they laid down a marker for their two limited overs series against England.
- Adil Rashid took all three wickets for England in the first ODI (3/26)
- Aiden Markram hammered his way to a top score of 85 from 55 for South Africa
- England have won three of their last four ODI matches
Head To Head
South Africa have won seven of their last 10 against England, with the English winning the other three meetings.
England Form
England suffered an epic collapse in their opening match as they went from 102/3 to 131 all out. Jamie Smith top scored with 54, but there was little else to to shout about as seven batters made single digit scores.
Bar Smith's half-century, the one bright spot was Adil Rashid's excellent spell as he accounted for all three of the South Africa wickets that fell. Jofra Archer should also get a mention as he continually sought the edge of the bat as he went for just eight runs from his five overs.
In the third ODI, England have to be far better with both bat and ball as counting on the exploits of just two players was never going to be enough. I back Rashid to star with the ball again, but England need to ensure they give their bowlers something to defend if they are to bat first. With the series on the line, I back the home side to give a far better account of themselves.
South Africa Form
South Africa were superb in the first ODI as they put England to the sword with both bat and ball. The only element of luck they profited from came in winning the toss. The decision to bowl first turned out to be an inspired one as the touring side ran through England.
Any thoughts that the pitch would prove tricky were put to bed as Aiden Markram smashed his way to 86 from 55. His innings was the standout performance with the bat as he notched 13 fours and two maximums.
I back Markram to have another good game in the second ODI as he goes past 50 once again, but I predict that South Africa will have to dig in against an England side that knows they should have been far better. With the series on the line, I back South Africa to stumble in the second ODI.
Verdict
I am backing Rashid to take the most wickets for England as Markram notches a second successive half-century. In a far more competitive match at Lord's, I predict England will come out on top.
