New Zealand vs England 1st ODI Preview & Tips
New Zealand return to the ODI game looking to bounce back from a frustrating 1-0 T20 series loss to England that saw the weather ruin two matches.
England were only given one chance to beat New Zealand in their T20 series and they took it, with the likes of Adil Rashid and Harry Brook on fire in that game.
- England have lost two of their last three in the ODI game
- Adil Rashid has taken 27 wickets for England in 12 ODI's this year
Head To Head
In their last 10 ODI meetings, New Zealand have won three times with England winning the other seven meetings.
New Zealand Form
New Zealand have impressed in the ODI format recently, with a comfortable 3-0 win over Pakistan ensuring they come into this series in good form.
In each of their three matches against Pakistan, New Zealand were able to post a score and defend it. Particularly impressive was their score of 344/9 in the first ODI before the Black Caps bowled their opponents for 271. With the bat, New Zealand have been strong. However, they shone with the ball in that series as Pakistan failed to breach the 275 run mark in any of their three outings.
England have found pacing their innings in the ODI game difficult of late. They have so much explosive power throughout their side, but if they fail to fire, teams have been able to run through their top-order and expose their bowlers.
I am backing the home side to take the initiative in the first ODI as they catch England cold and go 1-0 up in the series.
England Form
England humiliated South Africa in their last ODI outing as they hammered their opponents by 342-runs. This game saw England romp to 414/5 before skittling South Africa for just 72.
Jacob Bethell (110) and Joe Root (100) were able to guide England to a big score, while Jofra Archer was superb with the ball, taking 4/18 in his nine overs. When England fire in the 50 over game, they are incredibly tough to stop. However, they were twice stunned by South Africa in the first and second matches of the series, meaning their 342-run win had no bearing on who won the series.
Adil Rashid is always good for a few wickets when he plays. His incredible variations and control forces batters into making mistakes, and I back this to be the case once again as he takes the most wickets for his side. However, with England still looking for consistency in the ODI game, I am backing against them winning their opener.
Verdict
While I back Adil Rashid to take the most wickers for England, I am backing against the tourists taking a 1-0 series lead.
