New Zealand vs England 1st T20 Preview & Tips
New Zealand are looking to bounce back from a pair of T20 defeats to Australia earlier in the month.
England will take to the field in the T20 format for the first time since easing to a 2-0 win over Ireland in their series.
- England have won their last three in the T20 game
- New Zealand have lost three of their last five to England in the T20 format
- Phil Salt scored 89 and 29 against Ireland in his last T20 outings
Head To Head
England have won six of their last 10 against New Zealand in the T20 game, with the Black Caps winning the other four.
New Zealand Form
New Zealand arrive for their T20 series with England hoping to end a run of two consecutive defeats that came at the hands of Australia earlier in October.
Game one saw the Black Caps fail to defend a score of 181/6 before they once again failed to protect a total as the Aussies chased down New Zealand’s 156/9 with three wickets and 12 balls to spare. The abandoned second T20 was the only match that would have seen New Zealand chasing, with the Black Caps struggling to defend their totals.
The worry for New Zealand will be that they now face arguably the most destructive batting lineup in the T20 game. England will be confident they can chase down any score New Zealand post, while the Black Caps chasing down an England score will also be very tough if the tourists hit the ground running.
I predict that this match will be something of a learning curve for New Zealand as England win the opener.
England Form
England have been searching for a chance to show their quality in the limited overs game, and they seem to have found the formula in the T20 format. In ODI cricket, England have blown hot and cold, but their T20 form has impressed.
Six wins in their last seven have come alongside a single defeat that came in a match with South Africa in which the rain restricted their chase to just five overs. Away from this loss, England have been excellent, and they will be confident heading into this one.
Phil Salt has shone for England in the T20 game, and he will be raring to go once again. With England’s bowling attack still searching for consistency, they will need their batters to go big, and I back Salt to lead the charge for the travelling side.
Verdict
I am backing Phil Sal to star he leads the tourists to victory.
