New Zealand vs England 2nd ODI Preview & Tips

New Zealand were superb in their opening ODI against England as their bowling attack starred as they restricted England to just 223 in 35.2 overs.

England's woes in the ODI game continued in their first clash with New Zealand as their batters were found out in a superb bowling display.

  • Daryl Mitchell top scored for New Zealand with 78 not out in the first ODI
  • The Black Caps have won their last four in the ODI game

Head To Head

New Zealand have won four of their last 10 ODI's against England including the last two. The English have won the other six meetings.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand were excellent with the ball in their opener against England, restricting a dangerous batting line-up to a disappointing score of 223 all out. Zakary Foulkes was particularly incisive, taking 4/41 including the wickets of Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Jacob Bethell and Sam Curran.

The one worry for New Zealand will be the issues their top order suffered from as Rachin Ravindra's 17 was the top score from their top-three. As has often been the case, it fell to Daryl Mitchell to dig in and notch a match-winning 78 from 91 as he saw his side home.

On another day, New Zealand might have struggled to reach their target, especially with the home side teetering at 24/3. As mentioned, Mitchell has become the main man for New Zealand, and I back him to star once again as he builds on his excellent showing in the first ODI.

England Form

As has so often become the case in the ODI game for England, their opening 50 over match of the series saw problems with their batting and bowling units highlighted.

Since September 2024, England have played 21 ODI's, with 14 of these games ending in defeat. With only seven of these matches ending in wins, England have a real problems in the middle format. More worrying still is the fact that five of these seven wins have come against a West Indies side most would agree England should be beating.

Things could have been even worse for England had it not been for stunning resistance from captain Harry Brook, who smashed his way to 135 from 101, with this featuring nine boundaries and 11 maximums. With the exception of Jamie Overton (46), no other player could make it to double-figures, with England's batting proving a major issue.

With the ball, the tourists did take wickets, but they allowed the home side to build back from 24/3 to reach their target with four-wickets to spare.

While they will look to learn the lessons from their woeful display in the first ODI, I see nothing other than defeat in the second ODI for England, with this wrapping the series up as a contest with one game still to come.

Verdict

I am backing Daryl Mitchell to continue to prove he is one of the premier batsmen in the men's game as he notches 50+ runs in a win for the home side.
