New Zealand vs UAE T20 World Cup Preview & Tips


New Zealand secured a confident five-wicket win over Afghanistan in their opening World Cup game as they enhanced their hopes of securing a Super 8 spot at the competition. 

The UAE were humiliated in their final game prior to the World Cup as they fell to a 112-run loss at the hands of Italy. 

  • The Black Caps have won two of their three previous matches against the UAE in the T20 format 
  • Daryl Mitchell scored 25 not out in New Zealand's first World Cup game

Head To Head


The pair have met three times before in the T20 game, with New Zealand winning twice and the UAE winning once. 

New Zealand Form 


New Zealand were excellent in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup as they cantered to a five-wicket win over Afghanistan. 

Set 183 to win, Tim Seifert's 65 from 42 helped the Black Caps to steady themselves after losing Finn Allen and Rachin Ravindra cheaply. Glenn Phillips (42 from 25) was also key before the dependable Daryl Mitchell (25 not out) and Mitchell Santner (17) combined to get New Zealand over the line. 

While New Zealand have been able to put one foot in the Super 8 by defeating one of the sides fancied to challenge them for a spot in the next round, the Black Caps will know there is no room for complacency. 

A number of the best sides have already been pushed hard by supposed minnows, and New Zealand will not want to constitute the biggest giant killing so far. With the need for a win in this one clear, I am backing Mitchell to continue his excellent form in 2026 as he goes past the 20-run mark in a win for his side. 

UAE Form 


The UAE step out for their first match of the 2026 World Cup knowing that they are massively up against it if they are to make it into the Super 8. 

A group containing New Zealand and South Africa was always going to be tough to progress from. Throw in a very strong Afghanistan along with Canada, and the UAE will know they need everything to go their way if they are to escape the group. 

With four consecutive defeats heading into this one along with a 112-run loss to Italy in their last game, I back the UAE to lose their opening World Cup game. 

Verdict

I am backing Mitchell to score 20+ runs as New Zealand make it two consecutive wins at the T20 World Cup.
