New Zealand vs West Indies 1st Test Preview & Tips


New Zealand swatted Zimbabwe aside in their last Test outing as they easily beat their opponents in a win by an innings and 359-runs. 

The West Indies were unable to get anywhere near India in their last Test match as they were beaten by seven-wickets to complete a 2-0 series loss.

New Zealand have won eight of their last 10 against the Windies, with the latter winning once and one game ending as a draw. 

New Zealand Form 


New Zealand are looking for their first real challenge in the Test match game since they took on England at the end of 2024. 

Since their 2-1 series loss to England, they have only played Zimbabwe in the Test match game. Both of their wins over Zimbabwe came by big margins, with a nine-wicket win in game one followed by a massive innings and 359-run win in the second Test. In the second Test, the Black Caps skittled Zimbabwe for 125 and 117, while they roared to 601/3 declared as three players mad big hundreds. 

If New Zealand are able to channel a similar batting performance in the first Test, then they should easily win this game. One man that was missing from this win was Kane Williamson. The former captain returns to the squad for this match, and I back him to build on his impressive average of 54.89 in Tests as he leads his side to victory. 

West Indies Form 


The West Indies arrive for their latest Test series on the back of an awful run across formats. Their last six matches have ended in defeats, with the Black Caps winning their T20 series 3-0 before doing the same in their ODI clash. 

Their performances across their last six Test have also been awful. The Windies have slipped to three consecutive defeats at the hands of Australia, while they were also beaten 2-0 by India. The longest format has not been kind to the West Indies, and this series will likely see this run extended. 

Against a New Zealand side that will bring bowlers that consistently hit their lines and lengths along with batters that simply love scoring runs, I predict the Windies will slip to a sixth consecutive Test loss and a seventh successive loss across formats. 

Verdict

I am backing New Zealand to ease to the win as Kane Williamson goes beyond 50 runs for the home side.
