New Zealand vs West Indies 2nd ODI Preview & Tips

New Zealand were very impressive with the ball in hand in their first ODI against the West Indies as they managed to defend a score of 269.

The Windies only had themselves to blame for missing out on the chance to win the first ODI as some incredibly slow batting saw them lose to their hosts by seven-runs.

  • Kyle Jamieson took three of the six West Indies wickets to fall in the first ODI
  • The Windies have lost their last two ODI's

Head To Head

In their last 10 50 over meetings, New Zealand have won eight matches with the Windies winning the other two.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand have been seriously impressive in the ODI game of late, arriving for this one on the back of seven consecutive wins.

Three wins over Pakistan and three wins against England led them into a low-scoring clash with the Widies that they won by seven-runs. Daryl Mitchell was outstanding with the bat, scoring a match-winning 119 from 118 on a surface most of the batters struggled on.

With the ball, New Zealand did not bowl their opponents out, but they were miserly as no bowler to have sent down over eight overs went for more than 6.00 an over. On another day, the touring side might have romped to their target, but this win was testament to the discipline and precision of the home team's bowling unit.

In the second ODI, I am backing the bowling unit of the home side to come out on top once again. I was very impressed with Kyle Jamieson in the first ODI as he took 3/52 in his 10 overs. Not only did Jamieson prove a wicket-taking threat, but he was also miserly, allowing him to really crank the pressure up in the game.

West Indies Form

Restricting New Zealand to just 269 in their 50 overs saw the Windies arrive to bat with all of the momentum behind them. Dealing with a battling century from Mitchell and still needing less than run-a-ball was a big win for the bowling side of the touring team.

However, they were let down by their top-order as not one of their opening six batters could return a strike rate higher than 95.00. Indeed, it was only the exploits of Justin Greaves (38 from 24) and Romario Shepherd (26 from 19) that saw the match end as something of a contest.

Painstaking scores of 29 from 58 for Alick Athanaze and 32 from 67 for Keacy Carty were tough to watch, and they took all of the wind out of the sails of the touring side. With the match leaning towards them at the end of New Zealand's innings, this was quite the way to fall apart.

While I predict something of a comeback with the bat in this one, I do not expect it to be enough to see the Windies get the win they need. New Zealand are incredibly consistent and will target getting runs on the board and their strict bowling plans to once again defeat the touring side.

Verdict

I am backing New Zealand to secure a second consecutive ODI win over the Windies as Kyle Jamieson continues to take wickets.
