New Zealand vs West Indies 2nd Test Preview & Tips

New Zealand were denied the chance to go 1-0 up in their Test series against the West Indies as a spirited performance from the tourists saw the game end in a draw.

The Windies finally put their ability to bat on show, with Justin Greaves' determined 202 not out from 388 balls seeing the game end in a draw.

  • Kane Williamson notched a half-century in New Zealand's first innings
  • The Windies are winless in their last six Tests (L5, D1)

Head To Head

New Zealand have won eight of their last 10 Tests against the West Indies, with the latter winning once and one game ending as a draw.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand were on the cusp of a fourth consecutive Test win heading into the final innings of their first Test with the Windies, with the tourists chasing a massive 531 to win.

However, despite having the Windies teetering at 72/4, they could not get rid of Justin Greaves, with his double century the defining action of the match. Despite this, New Zealand had seen Rachin Ravindra (176), Tom Latham (145) and Jacob Duffy (5/34 and 3/122) star across the match. Had it not been for one of the more determined innings from Greaves, New Zealand would likely have won this match comfortably.

While he did not score a century on his return, Kane Williamson drew attention in the first innings for the home side. With New Zealand bowled out for 231, Williamson's 52 saw the former-captain impress as others around him struggled. I am once again backing the number three to go beyond the 50 run mark as he leads his side to victory.

West Indies Form

In a game in which the bowlers were on top in the first two innings before the bat dominated in the third and fourth innings, the West Indies were able to ride their luck as they secured a defiant draw against New Zealand.

While they skittled the Black Caps for just 231 in the first innings, all of their hard work with the ball was undone as they limped their way to 167 all out. With New Zealand then roaring to 466/8 declared, the Windies were on the brink of a big defeat in the opening Test.

However, despite slipping to 72/4 chasing 531, Justin Greaves arrived and refused to be removed. Ably assisted by Shai Hope (140 from 234) and Kemar Roach (58 from 233), Greaves' special score of 202 not out from 388 will live long in the memory. The worry for the Windies will be that aside from three good scores, five other batters fell for 15 runs or less.

Most will question whether this was a turning point for the weak batting line-up of the West Indies, or if they will revert to type in the second Test. I predict the latter, with the Windies likely to slip to a frustrating loss.

Verdict

I am backing Williamson to notch 50+ runs as the Black Caps make up for drawing the first Test by winning the second.
