Argentina are still in with a chance of shocking their counterparts in the competition, but they desperately need a win in their fourth outing of the season.
- Australia have won three of their last four in all competitions
- Argentina have lost six of their last nine
- Australia’s last two wins over Argentina have been by seven points or less
Head To Head
Australia have won five of their last 10 against Argentina, with the Pumas winning three times and two games ending as draws.
Australia Form
Australia’s Rugby Championship campaign has been brilliant so far, with the side beating South Africa and Argentina once apiece, while they ran the former close in the rematch as they threatened to upset the natural order in men’s rugby.
Their 38-22 win over South Africa in game one will go down as their best performance, with their exploits in the second-half truly special. However, their 28-24 win over Argentina last week will not be far behind after they showed real courage to turn down three points and a draw in favour of what turned out to be a match-winning try.
While going for broke will not always be the answer, Australia smelt blood and went after Argentina, who failed to keep them out. With two wins in three and a shot at potentially topping the standings depending on the result in the other game, I back the Aussies to ease to another tight win over the Pumas.
Argentina Form
Argentina will wonder what could have been after they were denied a second win of the campaign in dramatic circumstances. Discipline ultimately cost them as they coughed up a number of penalties late on, with the Aussies taking advantage and scoring with the last play of the game.
This week, the focus will be on providing more of that scintillating play with the ball in hand, but they must also focus on staying on the right side of the referee, who was given no option other than to penalise them regularly for their infringements.
While the Pumas are likely to push their hosts all the way, I do not back them to win this game. Australia are riding the wave of a number of excellent performances right now, and I back it to once again get them over the line.
Verdict
I am backing a second consecutive win for Australia as the home crowd are given another nail-biting finish in a tight game.
