England vs Fiji Preview & Tips


England were too good for Australia in their last Test match as they secured a 25-7 win that extended their winning run to eight games.

Fiji were able to edge past Japan in their last match back in September as they notched an entertaining 33-27 win.

In their last six meetings, England have notched five wins with Fiji winning once back in 2023. 

England Form


England have been building well under Steve Borthwick, with his solid style of rugby seeing the Red Rose go on an eight-game winning run. 

Often accused of being too pragmatic with a wealth of creative and attacking riches, Borthwick has clearly decided to let his side attack Fiji this weekend with a raft of changes. Most notable is the switch at fly-half, with the pragmatic and dependable George Ford omitted as Finn Smith comes in at 10 with Marcus Smith preferred at full-back. The pair are two of England's brightest lights with the ball in hand, providing England with world class options when in possession. 

With the likes of Tommy Freeman and Immanuel Feyi-Waboso starting on the flanks and Henry Arundell on the bench, there are some serious running options for this England side. Regular captain Maro Itoje will start on the bench this week, although this is likely due to their clash with New Zealand next week as Borthwick looks to rotate and also feel out his other options in the second-row. 

With eight consecutive wins heading into this one, England will be confident. Fiji will bring a powerful running threat that will test England, but the makeup of the home team suggests they will not be kicking as often as they have in the past. If England can get good service to the Smiths, then England will create holes that their players will run into.

Fiji arrive for their latest match looking to make it two wins in three meetings with England after their stunning 30-22 win over their opponents back in 2023. 

This win saw everything good about Fijian rugby put on full show as they landed a psychological blow heading into the 2023 World Cup. However, when the pair met again at the tournament, England ran out 30-24 winners when it really mattered. 

Heading into this one, Fiji have been good, beating Scotland, Tonga, Samoa, Canada and Japan. However, the level of opponent really jumps heading into their first outing in November. While I predict that we will see a lot of exciting running rugby, I do not foresee Fiji beating an English side in great form.

Verdict

I am backing England to ease to a win by 13+ points as they make it nine consecutive victories. I am also backing Tommy Freeman to grab a try as his return to the wing sees the Northampton flyer dot over for five points.
