England vs New Zealand Preview & Tips

England arrive for their clash with New Zealand on the back of two impressive wins over Australia and Fiji earlier in November.

New Zealand battled to a 25-17 win over Scotland last week as they made it two wins in as many games this month.

  • England are winless in their last four against New Zealand (L3, D1)
  • New Zealand have won by between 1-12 points in their last three against England

Head To Head

New Zealand have won eight of their last 10 against England, with the English winning once and one game ending as a draw.

England Form

England have started their November international campaign well, with wins over Australia (25-7) and Fiji (38-18) seeing two very different sides to Steve Borthwick's men.

Against the Aussies, many thought the high ball would rule, with England choosing an array of high-quality backs under the high ball. This did not ever really materialise though, with England's back-row proving electric across the match before their powerful bench arrived to take the game away from the Aussies.

Against Fiji, England were given more license to run. Fiji were well in the game at the start of the second-half, trailing by a single point at 14-13. However, four English tries in the second-half to Fiji's one saw England accelerate away as they made the most out of the gaps created by a tiring Fiji defence. Where once this England side might have looked to grind to a win, they embraced the chaos in part, with their play with the ball in hand proving to be fairly slick.

Against the All Blacks, the challenge changes once again. The All Blacks will be happy pinning England back with high balls and chasing, while everyone knows how slick they can be with their off-loading game a sight to behold when in full flow. In truth, this is a New Zealand side that will bring a multi-faceted attack that will stretch England to their limits.

England have once again looked to pack their bench, but with a number of players missing including the likes of Tommy Freeman, I predict that this England side will taste defeat for the first time this November as the All Blacks extend their impressive run against their hosts.

New Zealand Form

The mark of a truly great side is not always in the way they win, but the fact that they continue to win, and that is exactly what New Zealand have been doing of late.

The All Blacks weren't great in either game against Australia in the Rugby Championship back in September and October, but they still won twice. Against Ireland and Scotland they sputtered with ball in hand, at times looking brilliant, and at others lost.

Despite their inconsistencies, they arrive with a perfect record in November, and they will be confident they can roll England over. Like England, the All Blacks are missing a number of starters, but I back them to better deal with missing these players.

There does feel like there is a lack of real pace in this England backline, and this is something the All Blacks will look to exploit. While England's backrow is incredibly dynamic, it does feel rather light in weight. The focus for New Zealand will be on building a score as they look to ensure that the game is already beyond England before they empty what has proved a game-winning bench on two occasions.

Verdict

I am backing New Zealand to win by between 1-12 points for the fourth consecutive time against England as the home side see their winning run brought to an end.
