Ireland vs Wales Preview & Tips


Ireland are looking to keep their hopes of winning the Six Nations Championship alive as they eye a third win in four matches by downing Wales at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. 

Wales are looking to build on notching a losing bonus point against Scotland in game three as they finally got off the mark in the competition.

Ireland have won eight of their last 10 matches against Wales, with the Welsh winning two home matches in this time. 

Ireland Form 


Ireland roared to a 42-21 win over England in their last game as they humiliated their hosts at Twickenham. In a game most tipped Ireland to struggle in, the travelling side were excellent as they took advantage of England's insipid performance as they easily beat the home side. 

While England were poor, Ireland needed to do the simple things right, and that is exactly what they did. Now, the Irish turn their attentions to a clash under the lights against an opponent they are backed to hammer. 

Ireland are around $2.00 with a -27.5 point handicap, showing the supposed disparity between the pair. Indeed, Wales have not beaten Ireland on the road since a 16-10 win back in 2015, while the Welsh have won a single away game across their last 13 internationals. 

While little can be taken for granted in a competition that has continued to surprise this year, this one may be as close to a foregone conclusion as we will see this season. With tries likely on offer, I am backing Robert Baloucoune, who has been a revelation on the wing for Ireland, to dot down once again. 

Wales Form 


Wales were left crestfallen two weeks ago by a near-miss that could have provided the catalyst for a much-improved run of form. 

Their 26-23 home loss to Scotland saw the Welsh leading 17-5 at half-time, but they struggled to maintain the momentum in the second-half as they were beaten 21-6. While a single win does not change the fortunes of a side, it would have provided the winning feeling that has been missing for so long in Welsh rugby. It would also have ended their losing run at four matches rather than seeing it stretched to five. 

Against Ireland this week, the focus has to be on winning the ball on their own lineout throw whilst staying solid at the scrum. If the Welsh can at least maintain parity at the set-piece then it will help them to build with the ball in hand as they have struggled to consistently cut the opposition open.  

However, if Ireland can reach the levels they hit against England last week then Wales will lose comfortably. The difference in quality between the sides is massive, and I predict that Wales will head into their clash with Italy on the back of yet another loss. 

Verdict

I am backing Ireland with a hefty handicap as Robert Baloucoune adds to his two tries at the competition.
