Italy vs Australia Preview & Tips
Italy were humbled by South Africa in their last game as they were beaten 45-0 by an opponent that gave them no room to breath.
Australia are in need of a bounce-back win this weekend after they were swatted aside by England in a 25-7 defeat.
- Italy have lost five of their last six matches (W1)
- Australia have won one of their last two (L1)
Head To Head
In their last seven meetings, Australia have won six times with Italy winning the other match back in November of 2022.
Italy Form
Italy have really struggled for any form of consistency of late, with the side unable to take advantage of a win over Georgia in late November and a victory against Wales in February. Since then, they have lost five of their next six in a disappointing run.
Of course, it is worth noting that Italy have taken on France, England, Ireland and South Africa twice in this time. The worry will be that they have rarely troubled the opposition. Indeed, their 73-24 loss to France was followed by a 47-24 defeat to England. While they did push Ireland close, they then lost comfortably to South Africa twice (42-24 and 45-0).
The progress Italy have made over the last few years is clear, but it still does not put them in the same bracket as the best. Australia are only just ahead of the Italians right now, but they should still have too much quality on the park for the home side to end their losing run.
Australia Form
Australia have been disappointing in recent matches, with four defeats coming from their last five matches. While they have been beaten by Argentina, New Zealand twice and England across their last five, like Italy, they have struggled to consistently run their opponents close.
Last week, the Aussies found it tough to really trouble England. In a game that many thought would be dominated by the high ball, Australia struggled to get any front-foot ball as England's dynamic team selection told. It is worth mentioning that Australia were without a number of their best players, but they were still underwhelming in a game that they rarely troubled England.
While Italy will give them a challenge this weekend, this is not a game Australia should lose. The Aussies have made strides forward over the last few years, beating the likes of Wales, Fiji, the British & Irish Lions, South Africa, Argentina and Japan across their last 15 games. Italy are arguably better than just one of their vanquished opponents (Japan), meaning Australia will be confident that they can ease to a much-needed win.
Verdict
I am backing Australia to secure their first win of November as they ease past Italy with a -8.5 point handicap.
