New Zealand vs Australia Preview & Tips

New Zealand are in desperate need of a big performance in their penultimate Rugby Championship outing after they were humiliated in a 43-10 home loss to South Africa in the last round.

Australia were pipped by Argentina in their last match as their 28-26 loss saw them suffer a second defeat of the season.

  • New Zealand have won their last nine against Australia
  • Australia have been beaten in two of their last three
  • Two of New Zealand's last three wins over the Aussies have been by three points

Head To Head

New Zealand have won nine of their last 10 against Australia, with the Aussies winning once. This sole win came back in 2020.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand went into their fourth round game against South Africa with it all to win, but they ultimately came away on the back of a record defeat.

Victory in game four would have all but ended South Africa's hopes of defending their Rugby Championship title whilst strengthening New Zealand's claim. However, their 43-10 annihilation at the hands of the Springboks along with Australia's loss to Argentina has thrown the whole competition up in the air. Australia lead the standings on 11 points, with bottom side Argentina just two points behind.

In a championship that has been so tight, New Zealand's record defeat was a chastening result. The first-half saw the All Blacks go in 10-7 up at half-time. South Africa then won the second-half 36-0 as the All Blacks were beaten to nil. Both with and without the ball, South Africa were too good, with their intensity proving the difference.

This week, New Zealand have to be better. Australia are not on the same level as the Springboks, but they are quickly improving and will beat New Zealand if the All Blacks are off colour. While I back New Zealand to bounce back and prove their champion qualities, I do not predict a big win.

Australia Form

Australia have delighted and frustrated in equal measure at the 2025 Rugby Championship, with a pair of wins coming alongside a pair of defeats.

Despite their inconsistency, they still find themselves at the top of the log with two games to come. However, the Aussies know they could have moved clear at the summit with a win they were expected to secure against Argentina. Of course, it is worth noting that the pair traded blows in their games with neither side able to win by more than four points.

Ultimately, Australia were undone by a poor first-half that saw them go in 19-7 down at half-time. While they did threaten another stunning comeback, their 19-9 second-half win that saw three stunning tries scored was not enough. While the Aussies have twice fought back against Argentina in the previous rounds, they will not likely get the same chances against New Zealand.

This Australian side is quickly becoming a force in the game again, but there are cracks in their armour. The consistent need to bounce back and mount stunning comebacks is entertaining, but it is not a strategy Australia can count on. Indeed, I predict that they will slip to a second consecutive defeat as their hopes of winning the competition take a major blow.

Verdict

I am backing New Zealand to win by a slender margin as they secure a major comeback win following their loss to South Africa.
