The National Provincial Championship, abbreviated to the NPC, is one of the most popular rugby union competitions happening each year in New Zealand.

In 2024, Wellington managed to defeat all others as they notched the title, but they could not make the final this year as they were eliminated in the group-stage. This has left Canterbury and Otago with the chance to secure the trophy this season.

Canterbury ended the regular season at the top of the table, and they arrive for the final as the favourites after a superb run of performances.

Otago are the only side left standing in their way, with the outfit finishing the regular season in second. With the pair separated by just one point in the standings, statistically, this is the right final, with the pair only losing three of their combined 20 regular season matches.

In the semi-finals, both teams were able to enjoy big wins. In the early game, Otago hammered Bay Of Plenty 41-17. This was then followed by Canterbury easily beating Hawke's Bay 43-19. Incredibly, the margin of victory in both matches was the same.

Now, the pair come together for the final time this season with Canterbury the slight favourites. It is worth bearing in mind that Otago actually handed Canterbury their first and only defeat of the season so far, winning 38-36 in a pulsating match. Is this a sign of things to come?

If Canterbury are to win the trophy, it would be fully deserved. They have only lost once this year, drawing once and winning eight of their regular season matches. Otago would also be worthy winners after securing eight wins in 10 regular season matches, finishing a point behind the leaders.
