The new NPC season continues to kick up a gear, with the second round of the competition here already. We have our best bets from a selection of the biggest matches happening this week.
Waikato vs Wellington
Waikato began the new season with a stunning 36-35 win over Auckland on the road in round one. They now return home, where they are looking to build on an impressive run of three wins in their last four on their own patch. They have also beaten Wellington the last three times they have hosted their opponents.
Wellington were nowhere near good enough in round one as they were blown away in a 33-15 loss to Canterbury. This brough their four-game winning run to a grinding halt. Any illusions the side might have had regarding defending their title being easy will be gone now as the reigning champions face up to the challenge at hand. I predict another tough game for Wellington as they slip to another defeat.
Canterbury vs Auckland
Canterbury were outstanding in their opening game of the season as they downed reigning champions Wellington in a 33-15 win. This was their third win in their last four when including last year's matches. They will arrive confident they can secure a second win of the season this week when considering they have won their last three at home against Auckland.
Auckland slipped to a hugely frustrating 36-35 defeat at the hands of Waikato in their opening game of the season. While they came within a hair of winning the game, they were ultimately denied what would have been a huge win. With the side now on a four-game losing run when including last season's results, I am backing against Auckland getting the win.
Otago vs Hawke's Bay
Otago were excellent in their opening match of the season as they beat Southland 24-15 on the road. This was their fourth consecutive win when accounting for last season. However, Otago have been poor at home, losing two of their last three matches. They have also lost three of their last four against Hawke's Bay.
Hawke's Bay hammered Counties Manukau in their first match of the season in a very impressive 54-14 win. This win ended a run of two consecutive defeats and has see the side move to the top of the standings due to their superior points difference. While Otago will likely prove more of a challenge than Counties Manukau did, I still back the travelling side to win this one. They have secured victory in three of their last four against Otago, and I back a tight away win in this one.
Verdict
I am backing Waikato and Canterbury to notch wins this week, while I predict that Hawke's Bay will secure a statement win on the road this week.
