We have the latest betting tips for Round 7 of the new NPC season. With each side trading blows as the playoffs loom, which teams will capture that all important win this weekend?
Otago vs Taranaki
Otago host Taranaki in the game of the round, with the side in third-place travelling to face the team in second-place. Otago have been superb of late, beating Northland 29-10 to move up to second. They are now just seven points behind Canterbury at the summit.
Otago’s run of three wins in their last four and wins in their last two at home has proved the foundation of their push for the top spot. They now face the biggest test of their season against a Taranaki side that were taken to the cleaners by Bay Of Plenty.
Taranaki have now lost two of their last three in a run that has seen them lose ground on Canterbury at the summit. A win in this one would see them leapfrog Otago, but defeating their opponents will be far easier said than done.
I predict a very tight game in this one as two evenly-matched sides come together. While Taranaki have won their last four against Otago, I back two defeats in their last three to become three defeats in their last four.
Canterbury vs Tasman
Canterbury have been in irresistible form this season, romping to six consecutive wins in the NPC. The 28 points they have picked up means they are seven clear of Otago, while the boast a +134 points difference, seeing them as the only side with a points difference above 100.
Tasman were on the cusp of arriving with a very impressive five-game winning run in their back-pocket. However, they were stunned in a 29-21 loss to Auckland at home, with this their first defeat since they were taken apart by the Bay Of Plenty in a 37-7 loss on the opening day.
While Tasman will feel they have every chance of beating their opponents, I believe Canterbury will simply prove too good. While I do not predict a win as handsome as the 62-14 triumph they secured back in 2024, I do foresee a seventh consecutive Canterbury win this season.
Verdict
I am backing the home sides to take the points in this one as the pair move clear at the summit. While Otago still trail Canterbury, their place in the playoffs will be strengthened by yet another win.
