We have the latest betting tips and insight ahead of Round 16 of the Super Rugby season.
Highlanders vs Chiefs Tips
The Chiefs currently sit at the top of the Super Rugby ladder with a single game of the regular season to come. With 46 points, they are one clear of the Crusaders (45) who take on third placed Brumbies (43). A win in this one would likely be enough top top the ladder due to their far superior points difference to the sides below them.
For the Highlanders, this is the chance to end a tough season with only their fourth win. Three victories and eight bonus points have helped them onto 20 points, meaning they are level with Fijian Drua. While a win could see them move up the ladder, securing victory against the best side in the competition right now is fanciful. Five consecutive defeats and nine defeats in their last 10 shows they are trundling towards the end of a torrid season in woeful form.
The Chiefs did superbly to bounce back from their stunning 35-17 loss to the Hurricanes with a brilliant 35-19 win over the Crusaders which was followed by an 85-7 demolition of Moana Pasifika. While the Chiefs have not been perfect on the road, they will fancy their chances against an opponent that has lost their last two at home.
Brumbies vs Crusaders Tips
The Brumbies and the Crusaders are still battling for top spot on the ladder, with the home side sitting in third with 43 points and the travelling side in second with 45 points. Victory for either side will see them finish in second at least, while it could see them top the ladder if the Chiefs are to fail to pick up a point against the Highlanders.
The Brumbies have been in impressive form at home this season, winning four of their last five in front of their own fans. They also boast three wins in their last three outings, while they beat the Crusaders 31-24 in their meeting last year. Victory in this one is not outside of their remit, especially when considering their home form.
The Crusaders needed a win against the Highlanders in their last outing, and they just about squeezed to the victory as they beat their opponents 15-12. Barely beating an opponent that have collected three wins this term is a major worry heading into their final game of the season. Was their three-point win over the Highlanders a sign that the Crusaders are struggling under the pressure? While I predict a close game as third hosts second, I believe that the Crusaders will be leapfrogged on the ladder as they are beaten.
Blues vs Waratahs Tips
It’s now or never for the Blues, with the side sitting in seventh, one place below the six Finals Series spots. While they are hoping Moana Pasifika will drop points against the Hurricanes, the Blues simply have to focus on themselves as they look to ensure they are in contention to defend the crown they secured last season. With three consecutive home wins heading into this one, I back the Blues to notch their 11th successive win against their opponents.
The Waratahs sit two points and one place below the Blues heading into their final game of the season. While their hopes of securing a top six spot are slim as they need multiple favours, they are not out of the running. A win in this one would see them finish above the Blues, while it may see them taking Moana Pasifika’s spot in the top six. The worry for the travelling side is that they have not beaten the Blues since 2015, with 11 defeats coming in that time.
Verdict
I am backing home advantage to tell this week as two of the teams playing on their own patch win. I foresee the Chiefs topping the ladder with a comfortable victory over the Highlanders, while I predict a tight win for the Brumbies and Blues against the Crusaders and Waratahs respectively.
