Auckland FC vs Melbourne Victory Preview & Tips
Auckland FC were not good enough to beat Adelaide United in their last outing as their 1-1 draw made it two without a win for the side.
Melbourne Victory slipped to a shock 1-0 loss at the hands of Wellington Phoenix in their last game as their two-game winning streak was brought to a grinding halt.
- Victory have seen both sides hit the back of the net in seven of their last eight league games
- Auckland have won five of their 11 at home this season (L3, D3)
Head To Head
The pair have met a total of five times, with Auckland winning twice, Melbourne winning once and two games ending as draws.
Auckland FC Form
Auckland FC missed a huge chance to close the gap between themselves and Newcastle Jets at the summit to a single point as they were held in a 1-1 draw with Adelaide United.
While their opponents have been good of late, the Jets losing to Macarthur gave Auckland the opportunity to edge closer to going to the top of the ladder. However, a third failure to win across their last four means they have picked up five points from a possible 12.
Now, the focus will be on beating a Melbourne Victory outfit that sits five points behind Auckland and will sense this is a big chance to secure a statement win. However, with Auckland only losing three of their 11 at home all season, I back the Kiwi outfit to get the all important win despite failing to keep a clean sheet.
Melbourne Victory Form
Melbourne Victory went into their clash with Wellington Phoenix on the back of a seven-game unbeaten run that featured four wins and three draws.
However, they were left stunned by their opponents as Phoenix secured a 1-0 win that has seen the places below Victory become even more congested.
The worry for Melbourne in this one is that they have lost five of their 11 on the road, winning four times and drawing twice. While they will give Auckland a real test this week, I predict that they will slip to a hugely frustrating defeat despite scoring.
Verdict
I am backing the home side to secure the win despite having to pick the ball out of their own net.
