New Zealand were beaten 2-1 by Ukraine in their last international outing as they saw their strong run brought to an end.
Head To Head
Australia have won their last 13 against New Zealand in a dominant run that has seen New Zealand fail to get one over on their opponents since their 2-0 win back in 1989.
Australia Form
Australia are eyeing yet another win over New Zealand when they take to the field in the first international break of the new season.
Their last game saw the Aussies come through in a battling 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia. With the club season over by that stage, this pressure match for the sides could not become an end of the season knock around. Indeed, Australia sat in second in their World Cup qualifying group with 16 points, three ahead of their opponents in third.
As has often been the case for Australia in this qualifying campaign, they came up good when it mattered. Their 2-1 win means they have qualified for the 2026 World Cup and, with New Zealand also qualifying, this is a big chance to test themselves against another side that will appear at the competition.
The Aussies boast a stunning record against New Zealand, winning all of their 13 meetings dating back to 1989. With this in mind, I do not see anything other than an Aussie win. Games between the pair have not usually generated many goals, with the last three seeing less than 2.5, and I back this game to continue that trend.
New Zealand Form
New Zealand secured their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in style as they romped to a 3-0 win over New Caledonia in a match they did not look like losing.
In truth, their 19-1 aggregate score across their three qualifying games was no surprise, while they also hammered Fiji 7-0 in their semi-final. While New Zealand will be incredibly pleased to have taken their place at the upcoming World Cup, they know that they will have to take on far better sides at the tournament next summer.
Their clash with Australia is their first step towards the tournament. While I back them to keep things tight in a low scoring game, I do not see them defeating their opponents. The reverse of this game happening next week may be different due to home advantage, but this one looks like a 14th consecutive loss for New Zealand against their opponents.
Verdict
I am backing less than 2.5 goals to be scored in a match in which Australia have the edge.
