Central Coast Mariners vs Wellington Phoenix Preview & Tips
Central Coast Mariners were left hugely frustrated in their second game of the season as they slipped to a 2-0 loss at the hands of Sydney FC.
Wellington Phoenix ground out a 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar in their last match as they secured their first win of the new season.
- The Mariners have won their only home game of the new season
- Phoenix have seen both sides hit the back of the net in both of their last games
Head To Head
Central Coast have won three of their last 10 against their opponents, with the Phoenix winning three times and four games ending as draws.
Central Coast Mariners Form
Central Coast Mariners were unable to make it two consecutive wins at the start of the new season as they were beaten 2-0 by Sydney FC. Admittedly, this was a defeat on the road against a side that they have struggled against of late, but it was still a missed opportunity to make it two wins in as many games.
Despite their loss in game two, the Mariners are looking to make it two successive wins at home in the league. Their 3-2 win over the Newcastle Jets saw the home side score the winner in the 98th minute after they had allowed a 2-0 lead to evaporate.
After conceding two goals in both of their opening matches of the season, I am backing the defensive woes of the home side to continue despite picking up their second consecutive home win of the season.
Wellington Phoenix Form
Wellington Phoenix arrive having avoided defeat in their opening two matches of the season, with the side arriving for this one on the back of a 2-1 home win over Brisbane Roar.
However, in their only away game of the season, they were held by Perth Glory in a 2-2 draw. This draw saw the Phoenix come back from 2-0 down as they secured a point. While they did rescue a draw from a losing position, against a better side, they would likely have failed.
While I back the Phoenix to get on the scoresheet in this one, I am not backing them to extend their unbeaten run. Instead, I predict that the woes of the team playing away, with no side in the competition able to win on the road yet, to continue.
Verdict
I am backing a game of goals as Central Coast secure a second successive win at home this term.
