Newcastle Jets vs Wellington Phoenix Preview & Tips

Newcastle Jets made it five consecutive away wins in the league as they secured a 2-1 victory over lowly WS Wanderers.

Wellington Phoenix handed Sydney FC their first home defeat of the season as they took all three points in a stunning 2-0 win.

  • The Jets have won their last three games in the A-League
  • The home side have seen both teams score in three of their last four league games

Head To Head

The Jets have won four of their last 10 against their opponents, with the Phoenix winning five times and one game ending as a draw.

Newcastle Jets Form

The Newcastle Jets have continued to climb the A-League ladder in impressive style, with three consecutive wins allowing them to move to within four points of Auckland FC at the summit.

While topping the ladder this season would be a major statement, they will likely have their eyes firmly set on finishing in the top six and ensuring they go beyond the regular season.

Three successive wins heading into this one means that the Jets are the form side in the A-League. While I do not back them to keep a clean sheet in this one, I do predict that they will outscore the travelling side as they edge closer to Auckland FC, who face Central Coast Mariners this week.

Wellington Phoenix Form

Wellington Phoenix have been very good across their last three league games, beating Brisbane Roar and Sydney FC, with the side taking a point from Adelaide United.

Their seven point haul means they have dragged themselves into top six contention. The Phoenix now sit just two points behind Macarthur in sixth, and they will be buoyed by their stunning 2-0 win over Sydney FC in their last outing.

The major worry for Wellington will be finding a way to match the level of performance they hit last time out. While I back them to find the back of the net in a battling performance, I do not see them defeating the form team in the competition.

Verdict

I am backing the home side to take all three points despite adding to the 24 goals they have conceded this season.
