Nigeria have struggled on the road, securing a single win in their last three away games in qualifying.
- South Africa are perfect at home in qualifying (P3, W3)
- Nigeria have scored at least once in all three of their away games
Head To Head
Nigeria have won three of their last 10 against South Africa, with the latter winning once and six matches ending as draws.
South Africa Form
South Africa have been excellent in their World Cup qualifying group, with their battle to secure top spot one they are currently winning.
While nothing can be taken for granted, South Africa now have just three matches left in qualifying, and they boast a five point lead at the top of Group C. Another win in this one would see them secure an unassailable lead at the summit with two games left to come if Benin fail to win.
While I do not predict that Nigeria will be a pushover in this match, I do foresee a win for the home team. South Africa have won all three of their home games, while they have also won their last four in qualifying. While I do not back them to keep a clean sheet against a decent opponent, I do not see them dropping points.
Nigeria Form
Nigeria have been struggling in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, with the nation in danger of missing out on a top-two berth.
A win in this one would bring them back into contention for one of the top spots, but they are running out of time to catch South Africa, with just two matches to come after this one. This match is a real six-pointer for Nigeria, with defeat ending any hopes of finishing at the summit.
The worry for Nigeria in this one will be that their away form has been very patchy. A draw with Zimbabwe was followed by a defeat to Benin and a win over Rwanda. With South Africa arriving on the back of three consecutive home wins, I do not see Nigeria notching the win they need.
Verdict
While I do back Nigeria to get on the scoresheet in this one, I do not believe they will win this match. They have not been good enough on the road, and they face a South African side in superb form at home.
