Wellington Phoenix vs Brisbane Roar Preview & Tips
Wellington Phoenix secured a draw in their A-League opener as they managed to deny Perth Glory the win in a 2-2 tie.
Brisbane Roar ground out a 1-0 win against Macarthur FC in their opening game of the season as they began their campaign with a win.
- Wellington were held by Perth Glory in a 2-2 draw in their opener
Head To Head
The Phoenix have won five of their last 10 against the Roar, with the latter winning twice and three games ending as draws.
Wellington Phoenix Form
Wellington Phoenix impressed in their 2-2 draw with Perth Glory last week as they managed to come back from 2-0 down to secure a point.
Their goal in the third minute of injury time in the first-half helped to spur them on in the second-half as they took more shots (nine) and saw more of the ball (72%) than their opponents. While they could not find the winner, they did at least avoid defeat in their opening match.
This week, I predict that home comforts will see them dominate the game, but I anticipate that they will be left frustrated. The Phoenix have found it tough to consistently beat their opponents in recent meetings, and I back this trend to continue in this match.
Brisbane Roar Form
Brisbane Roar put on a very impressive defensive rear-guard in their opening match as they played most of the second-half against Macarthur FC with 10 men.
Following a successful penalty in the 38th minute, the Roar managed to keep their opponents out despite seeing 19 shots come towards their goal. With just 36% of the ball across the game, this was a masterclass in keeping the ball out of their own net.
This week, I back them to extend their unbeaten run in a battling draw. Two of the last five meetings between the sides have ended in draws, while the other three have ended in 1-0 wins for either side.
Clearly, the two have found it tough to separate themselves of late, and I predict that this trend will continue this week as the sides share the points.
Verdict
I am backing the points to be shared as the two sides fail to separate themselves once again.
