New Zealand vs Scotland Women T20 World Cup Preview & Tips
New Zealand Women finally got their World Cup defence up and running as they handed Ireland the tightest of four-run defeats.
Scotland Women were no match for England in their last game as they slumped to a 38-run defeat.
- Sophie Devine has scored 22 and 45 at the World Cup for New Zealand
- Scotland have lost their last two outings
Head To Head
This will be the first time the pair have met in a competitive cricket match.
New Zealand Women Form
New Zealand Women simply had to win their clash with Ireland after slumping to a pair of defeats at the hands of the West Indies and Sri Lanka.
Both defeats came with New Zealand batting first. Against the Windies, they posted a score of 162/6, while they battled to 150/6 against Sri Lanka. Given a third chance to bat first against Ireland, New Zealand posted their lowest score of the tournament so far (140/6). However, their bowlers made up for their issues with the bat as they restricted Ireland to 136/4 in a very tight chase.
Sophie Devine missed New Zealand's win over Ireland due to illness, but her potential return will add solidity to their batting unit. Scotland constitute a side New Zealand should beat, but I do not expect a big win. They struggled to the points against Ireland, and I predict more of the same in this one.
Scotland Women Form
Scotland Women began their T20 World Cup campaign with a morale-boosting 40-run win over Ireland. They were then handed defeats at the hands of the West Indies (by seven runs) and England (by 38 runs).
Their latest clash against England will have seriously knocked their confidence. Despite taking on the hosts and one of the favourites to win the tournament, Scotland could not restrict England as they hammered their way to 200/5. They were then restricted to 162/7 as they came up well short in their chase.
New Zealand are the better side in this one, but they are not in great form. This clash will likely be very cagey, with both knowing they simply have to win. Despite the fact Scotland hammered an Irish side that almost beat the world champions, I do not back the Scottish to take the points in this one.
Verdict
I am backing Sophie Devine to impress with the bat as she leads New Zealand to a crucial win.
