West Indies vs New Zealand 3rd ODI Preview & Tips
The West Indies were not good enough with the bat in the second ODI as their woeful score of 138 all out proved well below a truly defendable score.
New Zealand's bowlers were outstanding in the second ODI as Jayden Lennox's 5/19 saw him tear through the West Indies' batting unit and secure the player of the match award.
- The pair are level at 1-1 after two matches
- Daryl Mitchell has scored 84, 131*, 137, 65 and 28 in ODI's in 2026
Head To Head
New Zealand have won seven of their last 10 ODI's against the Windies with the latter winning the other three.
West Indies Form
The West Indies followed up a very impressive performance in the first ODI with an awful outing in the second as they slumped to a five-wicket defeat at the hands of their resurgent opponents.
Batting first, the Windies looked to have put themselves in a good position at 63 without loss after 10.3 overs. However, Ackeem Auguste falling for 18 from 27 then saw a string of wickets fall as the home side scored another 75 runs for the cost of 10 wickets.
Defending 138 was always going to be a huge challenge, and so it proved as the home side saw the Black Caps secure a five-wicket win. Despite their poor score, the West Indies still managed to take five wickets. Had their batters put on another 50 runs or so then the chase would have been a very interesting one.
As it was, the West Indies went from cruising to a seven-wicket win in the first ODI as they eased their way to their total of 268 to scoring below 140 mere days later. The Windies are crying out for consistency with the bat, and the opening ODI's have simply provided further proof that their batting unit is dangerous when it gets going, but really struggles to survive when the momentum is against them.
New Zealand Form
New Zealand were excellent in the second ODI as they tore through the batting unit of the West Indies in stunning style. After seeing 63 put on for the first-wicket, the Windies saw seven of their next nine batters return single-figure scores.
The Black Caps did have a slight wobble as they went from 35 without loss to 52/3, but they were guided home by captain Tom Latham (37 not out) and Michael Bracewell (24 not out) as they won by five wickets.
The third ODI will be about putting pressure on the batting line-up of the home side. New Zealand saw how quickly the home team crumbled under pressure in the second meeting, and if they can take early wickets then New Zealand should have more than enough to get home.
While Mitchell was dismissed for 28 in the second ODI, he is currently averaging an outrageous 111.25 in ODI's in 2026, and I predict he will see his side to the win.
Verdict
I am backing Mitchell to score well with the bat as New Zealand go 2-1 up in their ODI series against the Windies.
