Storm vs Warriors
The Melbourne Storm have struggled of late, with the side slipping down to 11th on the ladder with just four points. After a handful of matches this season, the Storm are closer to the Dragons at the bottom than they are to the Panthers at the summit. Worrying is their three-game losing run heading into this one. They have lost to Brisbane Broncos (18-14) and the Cowboys (28-24) in tight defeats, but their last match saw the Storm hammered 50-10 by the Panthers in a humbling loss.
The New Zealand Warriors began the season in stunning form, winning their opening three matches as they rubbed shoulders with those at the top of the ladder. However, defeats to the Wests Tigers (32-14) and Cronulla Sharks (36-22) has left the Warriors in need of something of a reset heading into round six.
Across their last 10 meetings, the Warriors have won twice, with the Storm winning the other eight. Importantly, the side playing at home has won the last two meetings, while four of the last five have been won by the side hosting this clash.
Tigers vs Knights
Wests Tigers have been outstanding of late, moving up to second on the ladder after a stunning run of form in which they have won three of their opening four. With Penrith Panthers losing on Thursday, the Tigers can match the points tally of the leaders having played one game less. With the exception of their 20-16 loss to South Sydney Rabbitohs, the Tigers have been perfect, beating the Cowboys, Warriors and Eels.
The Newcastle Knights arrive for this one aiming for a statement win that would see them leapfrog their hosts and go level with the Panthers at the summit. Four wins in five have come at the expense of the Sea Eagles, Bulldogs and Raiders, while their only defeat of the season came against the Warriors.
In their last 10, the Tigers have won three times, with the Knights winning the other seven. While the Knights have been far too good for the Tigers in recent years, the home side will be very confident that they can notch a stunning win. While I predict a tight game, I am backing the Tigers to get over the line as they go level on points with the Panthers at the summit.
Verdict
I am backing the home teams to notch vital points as the NRL continues to heat up.
