The 2026 National Provincial Championship (NPC) will see the top 14 provincial rugby unions from New Zealand battling for silverware.
In 2025, Canterbury topped the ladder before storming to victory in the grand final. No side could stop Canterbury from securing their 12th NPC crown as they extended their record of claiming the most titles.

The new season of the NPC will see Canterbury start as the favourites after storming to eight wins in the regular season in 2025 before then cruising to the title in the grand final with three consecutive wins.
While they were pushed hard by Otago in the regular season, the runners-up could not deny the competition’s best team the silverware as they were beaten in the final.
Despite their silver medal in 2025, Otago are not seen as Canterbury’s only competition. Indeed, Taranaki and Tasman join Otago near the head of the betting.
Prior to the start of the tournament, there are a number of teams battling to catch up, although it seems as though something miraculous will need to happen for any side away from the top group of teams to win the title.
As has become the case with many leagues and competitions across sport, the NPC will make the most out of an entire league season culminating in knockout rugby.
This season will see the 14 teams partake in 10 rounds of fixtures. The top eight sides from the regular season will move into the quarter-finals, ahead of the semi-finals and grand final, which is scheduled for October 24.
