Crusaders vs Waratahs

The Crusaders were left stunned by the Force in their last outing as their 31-26 loss amounted to their fifth defeat in nine matches this season. With just four victories so far, the Crusaders find themselves sitting in sixth on the ladder, 10 points short of the Hurricanes at the summit. Their loss to the Force came fresh off the back of a defeat to the Reds in an identical 31-26 scoreline. The Crusaders need a return to winning ways immediately or they will slip further short of the top sides.

The Waratahs eased to a 29-14 win over Moana Pasifika in their last match as they bounced back from a chastening 42-14 loss to the Chiefs in the game before. After eight games, the Waratahs have won four times and lost four times. The 19 points they have picked up means they are just two points behind the Crusaders in sixth, meaning a win in this one would send them above their opponents.

The main worry for the Waratahs in this one is that they have lost seven of their eight trips to face the Crusaders, while they have lost six of their last 10 meetings with their opponents. While the Crusaders were left stunned in their last game, I back them to bounce back in a much improved performance this weekend.

Chiefs vs Fijian Drua

The Chiefs needed extra-time to defeat the Hurricanes last week in a gripping match that saw the top two sides in the competition trade blows. With the pair locked at 17-17 after 80 minutes had expired, the Chiefs held their nerve as they secured a 22-17 win that means they are now level on points with the 'Canes at the top, denied top spot by their inferior points difference. Victories across their last four help to make up seven wins in nine this season, and the Chiefs will be very confident that they can hand their opponents a third consecutive loss when travelling to face the Chiefs.

Fijian Drua were outstanding in their last game as they handed the Brumbies a 33-28 loss on the road. This win allowed them to build on a 24-22 win over the Force, with Drua boasting four wins across their opening nine. Despite their impressive tally at this point of the season, Drua still find themselves sitting in ninth on the ladder with 16 points. Victory in this one would see them move onto 20 points, potentially allowing them to leapfrog the Waratahs and Highlanders into seventh.

While Drua boast a 28-24 win over the Chiefs when they met last year, they have lost their other three meetings, with two of these defeats coming by 17 points or more. With this in mind, I am backing a comfortable win for the Chiefs as their push for top spot gathers momentum.

Verdict

I am backing the Crusaders to edge past the Waratahs in a battling win as the Chiefs push Fijian Drua aside.
