The Crusaders were left to wonder what might have been as their 77th minute try against the Hurricanes to make it 38-31 failed to lead to them levelling the score late on. This defeat was their third loss across their last four as the Crusaders' woes in 2026's iteration of the competition continue.
With 27 points coming from their opening 11 matches, the Crusaders are now nine points short of the third placed Chiefs who have a game in hand. Five wins in their opening 11 is a disappointing return for the reigning champions, while they are now 13 points short of the 'Canes at the summit.
The Blues arrive for their latest Super Rugby match chasing top spot on the ladder after a strong start to the season. Having lost just three of their opening 11, the Blues have secured eight wins and 38 points, with victory in this one potentially seeing them move to the summit of the ladder.
The worry for the Blues will be that their last four away games have resulted in two wins and two defeats. Meanwhile, they have lost their last five on the road against the Crusaders in a poor run. While the Crusaders have not been at their best this season, I am backing them to edge to a crucial win as they hand the Blues a reality check.
Reds vs Chiefs
The Reds continue to impress in the 2026 Super Rugby season after winning six of their opening 10 matches. While they sit level on 27 points with the Crusaders despite winning once more than the champions, they have a game in hand and so could leapfrog their struggling rival with a win. While they will be desperate to take advantage of any slip-ups from the Crusaders, their attention will be firmly set on the Chiefs.
The Reds have won four of their five home matches this season with their last home game ending in a 30-21 triumph over the Brumbies. While the Reds did beat the Chiefs the last time they hosted their opponents, they have now lost four of their last six at home against the Chiefs in a run that will play on their minds heading into this one.
The Chiefs refuse to play second fiddle to the Hurricanes this season, with the side now just four points behind the leaders after a solid campaign. Four bonus points to the Canes' eight means the Chiefs do lag behind them, but a win coupled with a defeat for the Hurricanes would see the advantage of the latter disappear.
On the road, the Chiefs have won four of their five this season, while they have beaten the Reds in seven of their last 10 meetings. The last three times the Reds have hosted this contest has seen the winning margin stand at 1-12 points, and I back the Chiefs to come out on top in a tight win on the road.
Verdict
I am backing the Crusaders to bounce back from their chastening loss to the Hurricanes as the Chiefs edge past a spirited Reds side.
