Crusaders vs Chiefs
The standout fixture of the 15th round of the Super Rugby season sees the Crusaders host the Chiefs in a meeting between two genuine title contenders. The Chiefs enter with the momentum and better consistency across the season so far.
The Crusaders remain dangerous on their own patch and are rarely outmuscled at home. However, their 2026 campaign has fluctuated between dominant wins and costly defensive lapses. Defeats to the Hurricanes, Reds and Western Force exposed issues under pressure. While their recent win over the Blues restored some confidence, the Crusaders will know they have to be even better to beat one of the form sides this week as they look to forget about a run of three defeats across their last five.
The Chiefs arrive after a dominant run of seven successive wins that includes victories over the Highlanders, Reds and Hurricanes. While the Chiefs have been able to open up the opposition when needed with strict phase-play and running rugby, where they have excelled is in their defensive management of games. Their last seven matches has seen the Chiefs concede 22 points or less each time, with the opposition generally struggling to break their defensive line.
While the Crusaders are the home side in this one, I predict that they will struggle this week. The Chiefs have been outstanding across their campaign, and they have won five of their six on the road. With the Crusaders likely to push the Chiefs all the way, I back the travelling side to win by 1-12 points.
Hurricanes vs Highlanders
The Hurricanes enter this fixture as the team to beat in the competition after storming to the top of the ladder with 50 points from 12 games. After suffering just two defeats across their opening 12, the ‘Canes continue to prove that the tournament is not one that will be decided by the Chiefs and Crusaders this season.
At home, the ‘Canes have not lost a match since being beaten 31-21 by the Crusaders on April 11, 2025. Since then, they have won nine consecutive matches, with six of these coming in the current season. Particularly impressive was their 38-31 win over the Crusaders at the start of May as they put their ability to beat the best on full show.
The Highlanders remain competitive in the tournament, but with 24 points from their opening 13 matches, they have secured less than half the number of points their hosts have collected. In 2026, the Highlanders have lost five of their six on the road, only beating Moana Pasifika back in March. Against the ‘Canes, the Highlanders have struggled, losing their last 10 in a woeful run. With a 50-7 loss coming when the sides met back in March, I am backing the Hurricanes with a big handicap.
Verdict
I am backing the Chiefs to land a stunning blow on the Crusaders as the Hurricanes easily beat the Highlanders.
