Wales vs Italy Preview & Tips
Wales may have slipped to a fourth consecutive 2026 Six Nations loss last week, but their 27-17 defeat to Ireland saw green shoots beginning to appear for the beleaguered side.
Italy notched their first ever win over England last week as their 23-18 triumph sent shockwaves around the world of rugby.
- Italy have lost their last four away games in all competitions
- Wales have won eight of their last 10 against Italy at home (L2)
Head To Head
Wales have won seven of their last 10 against Italy, with the Italians securing three wins in this time.
Wales Form
Wales may sit at the bottom of the Six Nations standings, but they have been improving with each week that has come and gone.
In game one, Wales were dreadful. Their discipline let them down consistently as they gave England too much time and space in a 48-7 loss. While they were then beaten 54-12 by France, this came against a French side in full flow.
Against Scotland, Wales gave their opponents a real fright in a 26-23 loss. Glimpses of coherence in attack came with a better defensive display, with only some opportunism from the Scottish coupled with some Finn Russell magic able to see the travelling side home. Against the Irish, defence was the order of the day, with the blitz defence working far better as the passion and desire from each Welsh player was on full show.
Now, Wales have a huge chance to finally get a win in the competition. Italy are a better side than Wales are right now, but with their continued improvements along with playing at home, I am backing the Welsh with a small handicap, with their last two home defeats to Italy coming by three points or less.
Italy Form
The celebrations following Italy's win over England summed up the passion and desire of the former as they finally notched a win over the English.
While it was a scrappy game, Italy shaded the big moments as they punished the travelling side for their poor discipline and the fact they faded as the game wore on. Victory over England followed on from a win over Scotland on the opening weekend, with the Italians one win away from potentially moving up to third if Ireland lose to Scotland and fail to secure a bonus point.
While the mind will likely wander to finishing in the top half of the standings, the focus in this one will be on beating a Welsh side that they are favourites to defeat. This will be a strange situation for the Italians, with the side underdogs in each of their previous four games. Could being favourites work against the travelling side this weekend?
Verdict
I am backing Wales with a small handicap as they put pressure on the Italians in an enthralling game at the Principality Stadium.
