Wales vs Scotland Preview & Tips
Wales have conceded 102 points across their opening two Six Nations matches this year, with the side hammered by England and France.
Scotland notched a vital 31-20 win over England in their last match as they put their woeful loss to Italy in round one behind them.
- Wales have lost their last two against Scotland by six points or less
- Duhan van der Merwe has scored 35 tries for Scotland
Head To Head
Scotland have won five of their last 10 against Wales, with the Welsh winning five matches in this time.
Wales Form
Things have been poor for Welsh rugby for some time, but they are already staring at the prospect of five consecutive defeats in the 2026 Six Nations along with shipping well over 200 points.
After their opening two, Wales have lost 48-7 to England and 54-12 to France. While they have gotten arguably their two most difficult matches out of the way, Scotland will arrive looking to build on their win over England with a big display.
Steve Tandy has chopped and changed his starting XV but the issue for this Welsh side is that a lack of truly world class talent is hurting them. This Welsh side is in a time of real transition, and their results show this.
Despite their woes, I predict a tighter match this time around. Scotland have not always been at their best on the road, losing four of their last six across competitions. While they are the better team, their last two wins over Wales have been in 27-26 and 35-29 victories.
With Wales hoping to get their first points of the campaign under their belt, I am backing them with a +15.5 point handicap as they frustrate this Scottish side.
Scotland Form
Scotland enjoyed a stunning day of rugby against England in game week two as they stormed to a 31-20 win over England to get their Six Nations campaign up and running.
Against the English, Scotland dominated. Dominant tackles, consistent post-contact metres, reclaimed contestable kicks and brilliant crafted and finished tries was the order of the day as the home side took all the points.
Now, the focus has to be on building on their win over England and not reverting to the type of performance that saw them humbled by Italy in their opener. However, Scotland have had issues on the road, while the tag of favourites will likely hang heavily on them.
Duhan van der Merwe returns to the side looking to prove his worth on the wing, and I back him to go over the line for a try, but I predict that this will be a tighter game than some might expect.
If Scotland can hit the heights they enjoyed against England in the opening 15 minutes last week, this will be a big win for the travelling side. However, I doubt that they will consistently play in top gear as they are given some issues by their hosts.
Verdict
I am backing Duhan van der Merwe to mark his return to the starting XV with a try, but I predict that Wales will make this awkward for the travelling side in a much-improved performance.
