England vs Argentina Preview & Tips

England were able to eliminate Norway 2-1 in their World Cup quarter-final via an inspired performance from Jude Bellingham.

Argentina also needed extra-time to take their place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals as they found a way to beat a resolute Switzerland 3-1.

  • Lionel Messi has scored eight goals for Argentina at the tournament in 2026
  • England have won their last two matches against their opponents

Head To Head

England have won four of their previous eight meetings with Argentina, with the latter winning once and three games ending as draws.

England Form

England had a real battle on their hands in their quarter-final against a Norway side that took the lead and threatened to end England's hopes of finally securing another World Cup crown.

However, Jude Bellingham once again proved his quality as he scored both goals in England's win. The victory itself was hardly vintage England, but they were fairly good defensively as they starved Erling Haaland of the ball and only conceded one speculative goal. Victory was England's fourth successive triumph, although their latest one did come on the back of a draw after 90 minutes.

England have found a way to down their opponents across the tournament, with wins over Croatia, Panama, DR Congo and Mexico in 90 minutes coming alongside a win after extra-time against Norway and a draw with Ghana.

The pair have not met often, with their last meeting coming back in 2005. In that game England secured the victory to make it two successive triumphs, and I back the English to take their place in the World Cup final on the back of a third consecutive win over their big rivals.

Argentina From

Argentina eventually defeated Switzerland in the quarter-finals as the reigning world champions were taken to extra-time before they did run away with the win in a 3-1 triumph.

This victory makes it six wins at the tournament, although their triumph over Cape Verde came in a 3-2 win after extra-time, while they needed 120 minutes to beat the Swiss. Lionel Messi continues to be the focal point of Argentina's attack and despite failing to score in the quarter-final, will be the big threat to England's goal.

Despite being able to showcase one of the top attacking talents in the game, I predict that Argentina will struggle in this one. Defensively they have struggled across the knockouts. and I back England to make the most out of their key players to hurt Argentina on the pitch.

Verdict

While I back Lionel Messi to get a goal in this one, I do not back him to end on the right side of the score as Argentina are eliminated by England.
