Melbourne City vs Wellington Phoenix Preview & Tips
Melbourne City arrive for their 24th match of the season holding onto sixth place in the league, with the spots for the off-season incredibly hotly-contested.
Wellington Phoenix can leapfrog their hosts with a win, with the Kiwi outfit in fine form of late.
- City have won their last two home matches in the league
- Phoenix have lost three of their last four against City (D1)
Head To Head
City have won six of their last 10 against Phoenix, with the latter winning twice and two games ending as draws.
Melbourne City Form
Melbourne City still face a real test to make it to the next round of the season after picking up eight wins from a possible 23 to this point.
The 32 points they have collected means they are only four short of Adelaide United in third, but they are only four above Central Coast Mariners in ninth. With nine teams holding a realistic chance of taking six spots, City cannot afford to be complacent.
Their four-game unbeaten run heading into this one features three wins and a draw, while they have beaten WS Wanderers and Central Coast heading into this one. Phoenix have been good of late, but City have been too strong for their opponents in their recent meetings, and I back the home side to come out on top.
Wellington Phoenix Form
Wellington Phoenix have revitalised their hopes of having some part after the regular season ends after avoiding defeat across their last four matches, with three games ending in wins.
Impressive is the fact they have won their last two on the road, beating Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory in fine performances.
The major worry is that prior to their two recent away wins, Phoenix had won two of their nine on the road, losing three times and drawing four matches. With their poor recent record against City in mind, I am backing against the travelling side in this one.
Verdict
I am backing City to hand Phoenix a potentially decisive defeat in the A-League as the Kiwi side sees their unbeaten run brought to an end.
