Wellington Phoenix vs Central Coast Mariners Preview & Tips
Wellington Phoenix arrive for their ninth match of the season on the back of a hugely disappointing 3-1 home loss to the Newcastle Jets.
The Central Coast Mariners were also handed a home defeat in their last game as they lost 2-1 to Auckland FC .
- Both sides have failed to win their last two league matches
- Four of the last six meetings between the sides have ended in draws including their last two encounters
Head To Head
The Phoenix have won two of their last 10 against the Mariners, with the latter winning three times and five matches ending as draws.
Wellington Phoenix Form
So far, it has been a season to forget for Wellington Phoenix, with the side slipping down to 11th on the ladder, picking up just eight points from a possible 24.
While the season is still young, if they are to turn things around they will need to start picking up points more consistently, and soon. Adelaide United in sixth are just a point above them, but the manner in which they have struggled means a revival will not likely come quickly.
In their last 10 matches against the Mariners, the teams have been inseparable five times. I predict that the pair will share the points in this one as their woeful starts to the season continue.
Central Coast Mariners Form
The Central Coast Mariners have also found life in the A-League tough, returning an identical record to the Phoenix of two wins, two draws and four defeats.
Their latest pair of defeats should be taken with a pinch of salt though, with the Mariners losing to leaders Sydney FC before then falling to Auckland FC, who sit in second. While Central Coast did push both sides in games that were decided by a one-goal margin, they have nothing to show for their efforts from the matches.
This weekend, I predict that Central Coast will leave with a point, but it will do little to convince people that they will be one of the sides to take a top six berth.
Verdict
I am backing the points to be shared as two of the A-League biggest strugglers come together.
