Wellington Phoenix vs Melbourne Victory Preview & Tips
Wellington Phoenix could not hold onto a 2-0 lead over Melbourne City in their last outing as they conceded in the 73rd and 77th minutes to see victory evade them.
Melbourne Victory were left reeling in their last match as they slipped to a frustrating 1-0 loss at the hands of a Central Coast Mariners outfit that sat at the foot of the ladder prior to their meeting.
- Phoenix have only lost one of their last five (W2, D2)
- Victory have lost three of their last four (W1)
Head To Head
Melbourne have won five of their last 10 against Wellington, with Phoenix winning twice and three games ending as draws.
Wellington Phoenix Form
Wellington Phoenix continue to frustrate this season, with the side often tough to beat but finding it difficult to impart the knockout blow in their own games.
At 2-0 up against Melbourne City at home, Phoenix should have secured all three points, but they were denied victory as they conceded two goals late in the game. While a draw with last season’s champions was not a bad result, it saw their winless run in the league extended to two outings.
Their 19 points means they are two short of Melbourne City in sixth, while they are only four clear of WS Wanderers at the foot of the ladder.
Despite their issues winning of late, I am backing them to add a fourth victory in nine home games against an opponent that has been poor on the road this season.
Melbourne Victory Form
Melbourne Victory could not find a way to breach a Central Coast Mariners’ defence that had shipped 23 goals in their previous 14 matches.
Ultimately, Melbourne could not really get going in front of goal as they stuttered. They have now lost three of their last four in the A-League, while they have lost five of their eight on the road including their last two.
While Victory have a decent record against their opponents, I predict that their woeful run away from home this season will see them slide to another frustrating result as they are beaten again.
Verdict
I am backing Wellington Phoenix to secure all three points as they end their two-game winless run.
