Wellington Phoenix vs Newcastle Jets Preview & Tips
Wellington Phoenix have enjoyed a fairly good start to the new season, with their eight points meaning they are only one point short of Adelaide United in sixth on the ladder.
Newcastle Jets were beaten 1-0 by Melbourne City in their last game as they failed to build on a stunning 2-1 win over Auckland FC in the game before.
- The Phoenix are unbeaten in their last four against their opponents (W3, D1)
- The Jets have lost four of their last five league games
Head To Head
Wellington have won five of their last 10 against the Jets, with the latter winning four and one game ending as a draw.
Wellington Phoenix Form
Wellington Phoenix were beaten 3-1 by Auckland FC in their last outing as they were unable to make the most out of an impressive 2-1 win over Adelaide United.
Their loss to Auckland FC was one most saw coming, but they will be frustrated to have brought the score level in the 55th minute only to concede twice more. This defeat means the Phoenix remain on eight points, with the side now seven short of Sydney FC at the summit.
Wellington's aim this season will not be to top the ladder, but they will know they have the quality to challenge for one of the playoff spots. With the Jets losing five of their seven this season, I predict that Wellington will win this one, with this the sort of game they simply have to win if they are serious about challenging for a top spot.
Newcastle Jets Form
The Newcastle Jets have been incredibly frustrating this season, with two outstanding results coming alongside five defeats.
Their 5-2 win over Melbourne Victory saw the Jets hammer last season's runners up, while they beat Auckland FC 2-1 on the road, with this seeing them take all three points from last term's minor premiers.
While the Jets beat Auckland FC in their last away game, I do not expect them to repeat the trick against Kiwi opposition. Instead, I predict that they will have to head home on the back of another defeat.
Verdict
I am backing the Phoenix to get the win they crave as they defeat the Jets to make it two successive wins at home.
