Switzerland vs Australia
Switzerland arrive looking to build on a solid 4-1 win over Jordan in their last outing as they warmed up for the World Cup by scoring four times. It will frustrate them that they conceded against their opponents, but this will not worry them too much as they finally put an end to three consecutive games without a win. It is worth noting that two of the matches in this run saw them lose 4-3 to Germany and draw 0-0 with Norway. Both opponents are strong and will give most sides a real test.
Australia's recent outings have seen them take on a range of opponents on their run towards the World Cup. Wins over New Zealand, Canada, Cameroon and Curacao have come alongside defeats to the USA, Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico. When they have taken on strong opponents, Australia have struggled, failing to score in their last three defeats.
The Swiss arrive for the World Cup as a side that will give most teams a real test. While the Aussies will fancy their chances of turning their opponents over, I do not back them to win this one as they slump to a loss ahead of the World Cup.
England vs New Zealand
England are aiming to bounce back from a run of two without a win after drawing 1-1 with Uruguay and losing 1-0 to Japan. Despite their poor run, England know they arrive as big favourites to win this game. The two have never met in a football match, but England are the hot favourites to come away with a morale-boosting win. Each of their last 11 wins across competitions have been to nil, and I expect more of the same in this one.
New Zealand were given a major wakeup call in their last outing as they were humbled by Haiti in a 4-0 loss. This saw the nation slump to a fourth loss across their last five, with their 4-1 win over Chile their only victory in 2026. Heading into a World Cup summer, New Zealand's form is incredibly worrying. As they saw in their clash with Haiti, there will be no easy games or victories. I predict another chastening result for New Zealand as their preparations for the World Cup continue to stutter.
Verdict
I am backing both Switzerland and England to secure wins on the road to the World Cup with the latter doing so with a clean sheet.
