England vs New Zealand Women 2nd ODI Preview & Tips

England Women continue to showcase their quality with bat and ball, with their one-wicket win in the first ODI against New Zealand coming via a show of true grit.

New Zealand Women saw a two-game winning run in the ODI game brought to an end as they were beaten by England at the Riverside Ground as a huge chance to down their opponents evaded them.

  • England Women have won their last five against New Zealand
  • Amelia Kerr scored 55 for New Zealand in the first ODI

Head To Head

England have won nine of their last 10 ODI’s against New Zealand, with the latter winning once. In their last five meetings, England have won each time.

England Women Form

England Women continue to lead the chasing pack in the ODI game, with the nation currently languishing a long way off the world’s best ODI side Australia.

Being the best of the rest behind the Aussies is not to be sniffed at, but such is the quality and ambition in this England side that they will not be content with second best. Their series with fifth ranked New Zealand has been testament to this so far.

Their victory in the first ODI came on the back of an excellent bowling display that saw New Zealand's wickets shared around the team. With the bat, they were able to squeeze to victory, with this coming despite a spirited bowling display from the home team.

Now, the focus will be on winning their three-match series with one game to spare. New Zealand are a strong side and will push the English, but I do not see them defeating their hosts as the home side storm into a 2-0 series lead.

New Zealand Women Form

New Zealand Women may have lost their opening ODI against England, but they can still fall back on a solid run of five wins across their last seven in the 50 over format.

In the first ODI against England, New Zealand were had to almost completely count on Amelia Kerr (55) and Maddy Green (88), with the pair accounting for well over half of their total of 210. They made amends with the ball as they had England teetering at 201/9, but they could not find the all important wicket as the home side won in gripping style.

New Zealand’s focus will be on trying to restrict England’s batters by bowling consistent lines and lengths as they try to make the most out of the conditions. With the bat, the White Ferns will likely look to build a solid foundation before trying to motor in the final 10 overs, something they failed to do in their opener. Of course, this is easier said than done against an English side with a range of wicket-taking options.

Verdict

I am backing England to secure the ODI series with a game to play as they beat New Zealand despite more impressive run scoring from Kerr.
