England vs New Zealand Women 3rd ODI Preview & Tips
England Women edged to the tightest of wins in their opening clash with New Zealand as they downed the tourists in a one-wicket victory.
New Zealand Women will feel they let a huge chance to hand England an ODI defeat pass them by as they failed to take advantage of England's issues with the bat.
- Maddy Green top scored with 88 for New Zealand in the first ODI
- England have won their last five completed ODI's against their opponents
Head To Head
England have won nine of their last 10 ODI's against New Zealand, with the latter winning once back in April 2024.
England Women Form
England Women almost allowed a superb bowling performance to count for nothing in the first ODI as they struggled to their target of 211.
Skittling New Zealand for 210, each of England's six bowlers managed to pick up at least one wicket, while no bowler returned a higher economy rate than 5.00. In limited overs cricket, bowling at less than a run per ball is exceptional, and England's bowlers put all of their skill on show.
With the bat, England struggled. Maia Bouchier impressed with a top score of 59, but few others were able to really get a handle on the pitch. Ultimately, it was left for Charlie Dean (31 not out) and Tilly Corteen-Coleman (three not out) to guide England home. England will not want their eighth and 11th batters to have to see them home this time.
Fortunately for England, they have dominated New Zealand across their last 10. The White Ferns have won one of their last 10 ODI's against their opponents, and it is difficult to see anything other than another home win at the weekend.
New Zealand Women Form
New Zealand Women were right in the contest in the first ODI as they saw England slump to 42/3 after 12.2 overs. This was still the case with the home side at 160/7, still needing 51 runs to win. However, the White Ferns failed to take advantage of England's batting woes as the latter battled to the win.
With the second ODI rained off, New Zealand are not able to win their ODI series against England. Instead, a 1-1 draw with their hosts is the best they can hope for, but this still feel out of their reach. Each of their last five ODI's against England have ended in defeat, with four of these losses coming by five wickets or more.
One major positive from the first ODI from a New Zealand perspective was Maddy Green. Green played a watchful knock that saw her dismissed for 88. With most others falling around her, Green impressed as she kept England's bowlers honest.
Verdict
I am backing England to secure a series win despite Green continuing to score runs for the White Ferns.
