India vs New Zealand T20 World Cup Final Preview & Tips
India edged to a thrilling seven-run win over England in their T20 World Cup semi-final as the pair shared in one of the great last-four encounters.
New Zealand blew South Africa away by nine wickets in one of the more one-sides semi-finals in recent memory.
- India have won their last three T20 World Cup matches
- New Zealand have lost six of their last seven against India in the shortest format
- Rachin Ravindra has taken at least two wickets in his last three T20 matches
Head To Head
India have won seven of their last 10 against New Zealand, with the Black Caps winning twice and one game ending as a tie.
India Form
India were pushed all the way by England in a stunning semi-final that saw 499 runs scored from just 240 deliveries.
Batting first, Sanju Samson continued his scintillating form, cracking 89 from 42 after he was dropped by England captain Harry Brook. Samson made England pay for that drop as he spearheaded their charge to a daunting 253/7.
While Jos Buttler (25), Phil Salt (five) and Harry Brook (seven) all fell cheaply, India's bowlers were taken to the cleaners by Jacob Bethell (105 from 48). It will be a major worry for India that despite winning by seven runs, they almost failed to defend a score of 253.
While the five front-line bowlers are world class, if one has an off-day, their sixth bowling option is a weakness. If a player like Finn Allen can emulate his heroics from the semi-final against South Africa then India could be in trouble.
Despite issues with their bowling line-up heading into this one, it is tough to see them losing this match. Home advantage in-front of 100,000+ fans will spur them on as they look to utilise their knowledge and experience of playing on their own pitches.
While India usually have a wobble in them in a pressure World Cup match, I predict that they will come through this one as they secure the trophy by beating the Black Caps for the seventh time in their last eight T20 meetings.
New Zealand Form
New Zealand are eyeing up a stunning T20 World Cup win despite slipping to two defeats across the tournament so far.
Impressively, the Black Caps have not let losing twice hinder them, quite the opposite in fact. Their seven-wicket loss to South Africa in the group-stage was followed by a crushing nine-wicket win over the same opponents in the semi-finals as Finn Allen's outrageous 100 not out off 33 saw them home.
While they did lose to England in their final Super 8's match, they will have taken a number of lessons from that game. They will have also seen India's bowlers can be attacked, with seeing-off Jasprit Bumrah before going at the rest the plan most sides have looked to utlise.
Rachin Ravindra has starred with the ball across the tournament so far, taking 11 wickets across just 17 overs. His part-time spin has seen batters go at him, and this has generally seen them fall. With India looking to go on the attack, Ravindra may prove the option they target, and it could be their downfall.
While I predict that Ravindra will make it four consecutive matches in which he has taken over 1.5 wickets, I do not back it to be enough as the Black Caps slip to an agonising loss.
Verdict
I am backing India to dash New Zealand's T20 World Cup dreams despite Ravindra continuing to impress with the ball.
