New Zealand vs Sri Lanka T20 World Cup Preview & Tips

New Zealand were left without the chance to underline their hopes of winning the T20 World Cup in their first Super 8’s match as their clash with Pakistan was abandoned.

Sri Lanka took a hammering at the hands of England in their first Super 8’s game as they were humbled in a 51-run loss.

  • The Black Caps have won four of their five World Cup matches (L1)
  • Pathum Nissanka is averaging 52.00 at the World Cup for Sri Lanka

Head To Head

New Zealand have won six of their last 10 matches against Sri Lanka, with the latter winning the other four meetings.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand may sit on one point after the opening round of matches in their Super 8’s group, but their place in the tournament is still tenuous as they head into their clash with Sri Lanka.

After their meeting with Pakistan was rained off, both the Black Caps and Pakistan have a single point. England sit at the summit with two points, while Sri Lanka sit at the foot of the group without a point.

A win in this clash with the tournament co-hosts would knock Sri Lanka out, while it would also mean the Black Caps keep their hopes of making it into the next round in their own hands.

While Sri Lanka have shown glimpses of their strength, they have now lost their last two against Zimbabwe and England. New Zealand will sense blood in this one, and I back them to land a knockout blow on Sri Lanka as they head into their meeting with England on three points.

Sri Lanka From

Sri Lanka saw their hopes of securing a stunning World Cup triumph on their own patch take a major blow as they were completely outplayed by England.

Restricting the English to 146/9, Sri Lanka would have been confident they could chase down their target of 147. However, regular wickets fell as Will Jacks (3/22) and Adil Rashid (2/13) got Sri Lanka into a spin. By the time the final Sri Lankan wicket fell, the co-hosts had already been out of the game for some time.

With England at the top of the group on two points and both New Zealand and Pakistan locked on one point, Sri Lanka have to win this one. Defeat would see them knocked out as the Black Caps move three points ahead of them, while a win for England, a win for Pakistan or a no result would see one of the two move too far ahead of Sri Lanka.

While Sri Lanka arrive under no illusions regarding their need for a win, I predict that they will slip to the defining defeat of their World Cup campaign as they are eliminated at the Super 8’s stage despite Pathum Nissanka continuing his excellent run at the World Cup with the bat.

Verdict

I am backing Pathum Nissanka to continue his superb World Cup with the bat despite seeing his side slip to a third consecutive defeat.
