Ireland vs Scotland Preview & Tips

Ireland are hoping to secure an unlikely Six Nations trophy this weekend as they attempt to cap off the tournament with a fourth successive win.

Scotland are still chasing the title themselves, with the travelling outfit still buzzing with confidence following their stunning 50-40 win over France at Murrayfield last week.

  • Ireland have won their last three 2026 Six Nations matches
  • Scotland have lost four of their last seven away games in all competitions (W3)
  • Darcy Graham has scored three tries for Scotland at the tournament this year

Head To Head

Ireland have won their last 10 matches against Scotland in a dominant run of form for the former.

Ireland Form

Ireland's lack of bite and intent in their opening Six Nations match of 2026 is set to come back to hurt them with three consecutive wins following their 36-14 loss to the French not enough to ensure the Irish have the trophy in their own hands.

Ireland's battling 27-17 win over Wales last weekend backed up a stunning 42-21 win over England and a dogged 20-13 victory against Italy. With 14 points coming from three wins and two bonus points, Ireland need to beat Scotland and hope England can defeat France and deny them two bonus points.

Judging on England's performance last week, it seems more than likely Ireland will not get any favours this weekend.

Despite this, the Irish still have a lot to play for. Second place will likely be awarded to the winner of this match, while the Irish can secure the Triple Crown by beating Scotland this weekend. With the World Cup fast approaching, a second placed finish after most had written them off would be a good result from the tournament.

Meanwhile, they have a long unbeaten record against Scotland to defend, and I back them to make it 12 successive wins against the Scottish at home.

Scotland Form

Scotland know that they can win the championship for the first time ever, but they need to hope for a nearly perfect weekend.

A win over Ireland with a try scoring bonus point could see the Scottish crowned champions but, if the French win with maximum points, they would need to outdo France in the scoring charts, with the French's points difference of +79 far healthier than Scotland's +21.

Instead, the hope will be that Scotland can beat Ireland with a bonus point while England either deny France a bonus point win or beat them outright. Neither seem likely judging on England's performance last week.

As with Ireland, this is far more likely a straight shoot out for second place. With France playing in the final match, a win would pile the pressure on the French, while it would extend Scotland's excellent campaign. Darcy Graham continues to impress and I back him to go over the line once again as he adds to his three tries for the tournament.

Following on from their astounding 50-40 win over France in which Scotland made one of the best teams in the world look distinctly average on the day, the mind wanders back to that first weekend in Rome where Scotland were beaten by Italy. If the Scottish can beat Ireland this weekend, then their failure in Rome would ring louder than any other avoidable defeat in their history.

Verdict

While I back Darcy Graham to continue to score tries for Scotland, I do not predict that he will end on the right side of the score as Ireland leapfrog Scotland in the standings.
