Chiefs vs Highlanders

The Chiefs come into this match as favourites and remain one of the most well-balanced teams in Super Rugby Pacific. The Chiefs have won six consecutive matches and continue to combine the ability to cut teams apart with the ball whilst staying solid without it. With six consecutive wins heading into this one, the Chiefs are the form side in the competition.

Perhaps most important in that winning run was their triumph against the Hurricanes. The Super Rugby leaders held the Chiefs in normal time as the pair ended the 80 minutes level at 17-17. The Chiefs went about taking the points as they surged to a 22-17 win that once again underlined their title ambitions.

The Highlanders remain dangerous in broken play, but their defensive issues continue to undermine them. They have struggled to contain more attacking sides and have conceded heavily against top-tier opponents throughout the campaign. The Blues put 47 points on them in April, while their points difference of -50 is one of the worst in the competition.

While the season-long stats suggest that the Chiefs should be too strong for the Highlanders, their meeting back in February saw the Chiefs edge to a 26-23 win. At home, the story is different. The Chiefs have won four of their last five against the Highlanders, and I expect another comfortable win for the home outfit.

Blues vs Hurricanes

This is the standout fixture of the Super Rugby weekend and will likely have a large bearing on how the playoff spots look at the end of the regular season. The Hurricanes have already beaten the Blues 42-19 earlier this season on their own patch, producing one of the most complete attacking performances of the campaign.

The Blues have responded well since that defeat, winning four of their last five matches away from their loss to the ‘Canes. Their recent victories over the Reds and Moana Pasifika demonstrated their ability to take a team apart, with the side scoring 35+ points in each.

However, the Hurricanes still look like more of complete package across the park. With nine wins coming from their 11 outings this season, the ‘Canes are a side that will be incredibly tough to defeat.

The key betting angle here is likely points rather than match result. Both sides play with attacking intent and neither defence has looked consistently dominant against elite opposition. Four of the Blues’ last five matches have produced at least 59 total points, while the Hurricanes have seen the same in their last two outings.

Verdict

I am backing the Chiefs to easily beat the Highlanders as the Blues and Hurricanes share in an entertaining match with over 57.5 points scored.
