Auckland FC vs Central Coast Mariners Preview & Tips
Auckland FC missed the chance to close in on Newcastle Jets at the top of the ladder as they were held by Melbourne Victory in a 2-2 draw.
Central Coast Mariners took a point from Brisbane Roar in their last game as their winless run in the league was extended to five matches.
- The home side have seen both sides score in their last five league games
- Auckland have won five of their 12 at home this season (D4, L3)
Head To Head
The teams have only met four times before, with Auckland winning twice and two games ending as draws.
Auckland FC Form
Auckland FC will have been cursing their luck last weekend as their 2-2 draw with Melbourne Victory saw them fail to take full advantage of Newcastle Jets drawing 1-1 with Adelaide United.
The gap between Auckland and the Jets still stands at three points, with neither of the two sides seemingly inclined to take advantage at the top. Indeed, Auckland have failed to win any of their last three (D2, L1), while the Jets have one win across their last four (L2, D1).
With their need for a win great, I am backing Auckland to secure their first victory since their 2-1 win over the Jets back on March 14.
Central Coast Mariners Form
Central Coast Mariners need to be perfect in their final two matches as they try to overturn a six point gap between themselves and Melbourne City in sixth.
Across their last five games the Mariners have lost twice and drawn three matches. The three points they have picked up from a possible 15 has cost them a shot at the top six and I believe this will show in their penultimate game.
The Mariners have shown fight across the season, but they have all too often let themselves down at the back, conceding 38 times in 24 matches. While I back the travelling side to score, I do not predict that they will keep a clean sheet. In fact, I back both sides to score for the seventh consecutive match involving Central Coast.
Verdict
I am backing Auckland FC to secure all three points despite having to pick the ball out of their own net once again.
