Bangladesh vs New Zealand 1st ODI Preview & Tips
Bangladesh edged to an 11-run win over Pakistan in their last outing last month as they completed a 2-1 series triumph over their opponents.
New Zealand were beaten 3-2 by South Africa in the T20 format in March as their immediate return to the pitch following the T20 World Cup ended in defeat.
- Henry Nicholls averages 45.00 with the bat against Bangladesh in the ODI format
- New Zealand have lost their last two matches in all formats
Head To Head
New Zealand have won nine of their last 10 against Bangladesh, with the latter winning once. In their last two matches, both sides have won one match apiece, with Bangladesh's win coming by nine wickets.
Bangladesh Form
Bangladesh's omission from the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka did not hurt their ability to beat the best sides, with the nation easing to an impressive 2-1 win over Pakistan in their ODI series in March.
For a side that has only played in three matches across formats in 2026, their wins by eight wickets in the first ODI and 11 runs in the third ODI were hugely impressive. While Pakistan did looked fatigued following a long and arduous World Cup campaign, they still had a range of world class talent that Bangladesh dealt with.
Against New Zealand, the head to head would allude to this being a match New Zealand should win, with the Black Caps winning nine of their last 10 against their opponents. However, New Zealand arrive with an inexperienced squad, and Bangladesh will be very confident they can use home conditions to their advantage.
New Zealand Form
New Zealand were a single win away from securing the T20 World Cup trophy and ensuring 2026 went down in the history books. However, they were blown away by India in a 96-run loss that saw the Black Caps torn apart with bat and ball.
They then ventured into a poorly-timed five-match T20 series with South Africa. While both teams were without a range of their best players, South Africa were able to show their class as they bounced back from going 2-1 down in the series by winning the final two T20's and triumphing 3-2.
Now, New Zealand's inexperienced squad take on a Bangladesh side that will want to prove that despite their omission from the recent World Cup, they are still able to beat the best.
Henry Nicholls will likely be central to New Zealand's hope of posting good scores in this series. With an ODI average of 45.00 against Bangladesh, I predict that he will go beyond the 30-run mark, although I do not believe it will be enough to help the Black Caps to the win.
Verdict
Despite Nicholls going beyond the 30-run mark for the touring side, I predict that New Zealand will slip to a defeat in their opener against their hosts.
