England vs New Zealand Women 2nd T20 Preview & Tips
England Women can wrap up their T20 series against New Zealand with a game to play after storming to victory in their opening clash in the shortest format.
New Zealand Women were undone by a disappointing batting display in the first T20 as they trundled to just 136/7 in their 20 overs, leaving their bowlers with too few runs to defend.
- England have won their last nine T20's against New Zealand
Head To Head
England Women have dominated this fixture recently, winning nine of the last 10 completed matches against New Zealand Women across the T20 format. In this time, New Zealand have won once.
England Form
England battled to an impressive seven-wicket win over New Zealand in their opening T20 clash as they began the series in solid form. Alice Capsey’s unbeaten 74 in the opening match solved any lingering concerns around top-order tempo as she went at 145.10, while Freya Kemp added late intent with 31 not out from 20 at 155.00.
England's bowling unit arguably remains their real trump card. Lauren Bell continues to provide early wickets with seam movement, while Linsey Smith and Charlie Dean added control with the ball in the first T20. England also impressed in the field as they looked to back up strict lines with the ball.
Conditions at Canterbury should again favour England’s deeper attack, and this will be particularly true if the surface begins to slow as the match wears on. England's ability to play against both pace and spin will be crucial in this series, and I predict that this will see them hit New Zealand's best bowlers out of the attack.
New Zealand Form
New Zealand remain competitive but inconsistent against the best. Sophie Devine’s aggressive 45 at a strike rate of over 200.00 saw the number four take the attack to England. However, there were few that could match her intensity with the bat as the top three all fell for 12 runs or less.
Amelia Kerr remains their key all-round threat, but New Zealand’s captain was dismissed for just eight before she went wicketless across her four overs for 26 runs. Instead of seeing Kerr off, England were able to milk runs from Amelia Kerr before going after Jess Kerr (46/1 from four overs).
If New Zealand continue to struggle to score consistently with the bat then their bowlers will have a hard time challenging England's deep batting unit. While the White Ferns will likely be more competitive in this one, I am not backing them to keep the series alive as a contest.
Verdict
I am backing Alice Capsey to continue to impress with the bat for England as the home side storm into an unassailable 2-0 lead.
