Wellington Phoenix vs WS Wanderers Preview & Tips

Wellington Phoenix slipped to a 2-0 loss against Melbourne City in their last match as their impressive three-game winning run in the league was brought to a grinding halt.

WS Wanderers prop up the A-League ladder after securing just 21 points from their 24 matches.

  • Wanderers have lost eight of their 12 away games this season (W2, D2)

Head To Head

Phoenix have won three of their last 10 against their opponents, with the Wanderers winning three times and four matches ending as draws.

Wellington Phoenix Form

Wellington Phoenix have an outside shot of taking a top six spot in the A-League this season, but they need to hope that Melbourne City lose their next two matches.

Phoenix have secured 30 points while City sit 0n 35. Wellington’s 2-0 loss to City in their last outing was likely the result that put an end to Phoenix’s top six hopes, although they know they cannot afford to let this impact their performance.

While Phoenix have not been great at home of late, they have at least won three of their last four in the competition. WS have been in awful form this season, and if Phoenix have any hopes of securing a top six spot, they simply have to win this one.

WS Wanderers Form

WS Wanderers have not been anywhere near good enough this season, with the side currently 14 points short of Melbourne City in sixth with two games to go.

Without a win since their 4-0 hammering of Macarthur back on February 28, WS have lost four of their last five, drawing once with Brisbane Roar in a torrid run.

While Wanderers will target a big performance as they look to end the season positively, I do not back them to get anything from this one. Their inability to win across the season has been particularly clear on the road, where they have won two of their 12, drawing twice and losing eight times.

Verdict

I am backing Phoenix to secure a big win in the context of their season as they hand the Wanderers a 14th defeat of their campaign.
